The 5 best kept secrets of Patagonia

R40MotoArgentina

Although we are Patagonians and have traveled extensively in this region, we are still far from being able to consider ourselves experts on such a large and impressive territory. If we count Patagonia as a region of two countries, Chile and Argentina, and we make the cut in the Argentine Colorado River and the Araucanía Region in Chile, we have a geographical space of more than 1 million square kilometers, more than 2,500 linear kilometers of the Andes Mountains, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans on their respective margins and the gateway to the Antarctic continent to the South.

Powerful rivers, fertile valleys, dense forests and jungles, unique natural and archaeological heritage, immeasurable natural wealth. Diverse sources of potential and currently successfully exploited energy, incredible landscapes and a relatively low population density. Diverse climates ranging from temperate to cold. Rainfall regimes ranging from 8,000 mm per year to 50 mm per year. Thousands and thousands of square kilometers dedicated to conservation by national or sub-national states and the private sector and a challenging road network for fun motorcycle riding.

In that space that still remains largely unexplored for us, where every year and on every trip we have a new surprise because we know a new road, another lake or river, a different perspective of a glacier or simply a sector of the route that was devastated by winter and disinvestment and is presented to us as a place full of potholes, pits and difficult to transit. In this space there are some places that stand out, that are not common or repeated. Places that are really worth knowing and making the effort to reach them despite the distance, the gravel and the wind.

In this entry, we chose five and based on these guidelines: we discarded all access by asphalt; we consider that they are places possible to transit by most adventure motorcyclists and we do not exaggerate the difficulty of access in terms of fording rivers, arriving by boat, entering private sites. Because there are undoubtedly places that can only be accessed on foot, on horseback or on enduro motorcycles and with very skilled riders. The goal is that these places organize your next dream trip in Patagonia!

Only five? Yes, it's a first entry in this blog.

These are your guests!

  • Piedra Parada(see map) The chimney of a gigantic prehistoric volcano, a rock that has resisted the erosion of water and wind? And nearby is the canyon of the buitrera!
  • El Saltillo(see map) A wonder on the plateau. A place where rivers are formed. The water is always warm because of the shelter from the wind and sun.
  • Lago del Desierto - El Chaltén(see map) From the lake, you can see Cerro Chaltén or Fitz Roy. The access road is a dream.
  • Marble Cathedrals (Lago General Carrera) (see map) They are a marble formation that is accessed by sailing from Puerto Rio Tranquilo in an inexpensive 90-minute tour. You leave your motorcycle and helmet under some willows.
  • Paso Roballo - Lake Posadas (Patagonia Park - Valle Chacabuco) (see map) The natural bridge that joins Lake Pueyrredón with Lake Posadas is something magical.

We could give a description of each place, but there is enough information available on the net and we don't think it is necessary to repeat it. I repeat: they are worth it, so add them to your to-do list without fear and next time you travel, try to make some of these places a stop on your way!
